Jackson wants his party out of Alliance

Mana Motuhake leader Willie Jackson will recommend next month that his party unhitch from the Alliance and become part of a "super-Maori party", spanning the left-right divide.

"We can't confine ourselves to be some flag-waving tino rangatiratanga-type party," Mr Jackson said yesterday. "We've got to be seen as a party that embraces all of our people otherwise we'll always be sucked in to the left-wing, right-wing type paradigms."

Mr Jackson and the Mana Motuhake executive will make the recommendation at the party's annual meeting.

Mr Jackson resigned at the weekend as Alliance deputy - a post he took up after the Alliance split in April.
