Israeli tramper rescued from Lake Monowai, Fiordland National Park

An Israeli tramper was rescued yesterday evening after he became disorientated in Fiordland National Park.

A police spokeswoman said he was tramping with an English friend to Rodger Inlet Hut near Lake Monowai. The Englishman went ahead and they were going to meet at the hut that evening. But the Israeli man got disorientated and set off his personal locator beacon around 7.30pm.

"They located him. He was alone, uninjured and about 1.3miles (2km) north of Rodger Inlet Hut."

Southern Lakes Helicopters owner Richard Hayes said his son, who is also a pilot, picked up the tramper. Police said he was found around 8.45pm.

Hayes said the hiker was found around Lake Monowai.

"It was a winch job with a paramedic through the bush."

The police spokeswoman thought they might get a call this afternoon from the tramper who made it to the hut who would be worried about his companion.

"No doubt they'll come out, call police say 'where's my friend?' and we'll say 'we've got him'."

She wanted to emphasise that the tramping duo were well prepared and had a good plan. The Israeli had warm clothing and lots of food. He carried their personal locator beacon but his companion had made sure he was with someone else who also had one.

"They've done everything right.

"They went in with a plan and were well prepared."
