Locals in Taoyuan Province, Taiwan, noticed that the guards around
a local Army base always seemed to stand in the same position without moving. Curious, some locals went closer and were shocked to discover the soldiers were dummies dressed as soldiers. An official put the ruse down to a manpower shortage. They figured the fake soldiers would be sufficient to scare away any attackers. James Wakefield hoped to win back his girlfriend's affections by having her abducted by a friend, then "heroically" rescuing her, a court heard. He offered his friend Aaron Rawson £20,000 ($53,500) to take the woman to a wood and threaten to attack her, while wearing a Dalek-voice changer helmet to disguise his voice. Then Wakefield would turn up and "save" her in the hope of winning her back, the court heard. Rawson, 21, claimed he thought Wakefield was joking until he turned up with the helmet, night-vision goggles, handcuffs, an air pistol, a balaclava, a boiler suit and a knife block. The court was told that Rawson was meant to go to the woman's home in Newark, Nottinghamshire, hold the knife to her throat, then bundle her into the boot of a car and take her to the woods. But after waiting outside her home twice, Rawson abandoned the plan. On the first occasion, he ran away after he was "spooked" by a cat. The lengths some people will go to for free stuff: Cameron, who was also at the screening of Dark Knight at St Lukes (Thursday 8.45pm), says the minor sound problem in the last minute was not worth a full refund which some patrons were demanding. "I wanted to speak to the manager with the intention of letting them know so it wouldn't happen again. Apparently the rest of the group had other ideas. There were 30 people with about 30 different stories. Some went so far as to say the film was inaudible the whole way through. Quite rightly the manager tried to find out what the real problem was. It would be very unfair if she were to get into trouble because of Mr Tomuri's exaggerations, and her superiors should know that she handled a difficult situation very appropriately and the free passes she handed out were given with a smile."
