Google made me do it
A woman is suing Google because Google Maps issued directions that told her to walk down a rural highway. The Los Angeles native was walking down a highway in Utah - which had no footpaths - and was struck by a car. She is suing Google for US$100,000 in medical expenses as well as punitive damages. "An email exchange spotted on our staff notice board," writes a reader. Request: "Dear Josie, I really need the 12th and 13th of Feb 2011 off so I can attend my friends wedding. Dan." Reply: "Dear Dan, As you have not given sufficient notice of the required time off we are unable to grant your request. Very sorry but we require a minimum of 2 years' notice for leave in this period. Josie xx."
Nailing the ditherers
Who is really to blame for council building approval delays and third-party heads up? A reader says the usual timeframe is 20 business days; however, delays can happen if further information is required from the architect or builders. "A huge amount of the time delays are caused by them dithering and then passing the blame on to council. As for supplying information to third parties, councils are obligated to provide requested information under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act. There is a company that requests this information every month in order to provide a list of contacts to other business who then use the information to solicit sales."
Many happy reverberations
Further to the birthday fireworks display in Remuera on Saturday night: "Without naming names there was a 50th taking place on the night in question, which may or may not have included the use of fireworks with such names as Mortar," suggests an anonymous reader. "The neighbours were pre-warned and ear plugs were duly handed around the neighbourhood. However, reports of the occasion being heard in Glendowie indicate the number of ear plugs and their distribution radius were wildly under-estimated."
