Ireland have beaten the All Blacks in Chicago, and social media is going nearly as mad as the Irish fans at Soldier Field stadium.

The hashtag #IREvNZL is a top trending topic on Twitter, and everyone from comedians, golf stars and former rugby players are joining in.

Top Irish golfer Rory McIlroy led with an incomprehensible tweet that summed up how many Ireland fans were feeling - speechless:

Munster Rugby tweeted: "What a time to be Irish.... What a moment! Enjoy every minute of it."

The officical Irish Rugby Twitter account said: "Made a note in the diary today. Simply says...YES! #TeamOfUs #shouldertoshoulder"

This spoof account of the Irish President said Ireland centre Robbie Henshaw should be promoted to vice-president of the nation.

They said the All Blacks couldn't be beat, this was a different team. This, was the fighting Irish! #IREvNZL #shouldertoshoulder

Holy Jaysus! Just woke up from a MAD dream - I was in Chicago and Ireland beat The All Blacks to win The World Series!!! #WTF #IREvNZL

— Patrick Kielty (@PatricKielty) November 5, 2016

This tweet summed up the nail biting end to the game, when the All Blacks came fighting back.

While Brendan Dunne said what many others are saying - does the win make Ireland unofficial world champions:

"So that makes ireland unofficial world champions...of course it does. #IREvNZL," he posted

But it wasn't so much fun for the All Blacks fans. One likened the result to when the hero of your favourite movie "dies at the end":

This New Zealand fan's not holding a grudge though:

Tweeting under the handle @nakiwa22 said: "Well done Ireland, enjoy the win. It won't happen again in you lifetime."

Dan Carter has posted this picture of him with his Racing 98 teammate and former Ireland fly-half Ronan O'Gara:

Congratulations Ireland. A long time coming but deserved the win tonight. Someone's happy & it's not me @RonanOGara10 pic.twitter.com/iStgCExAGn

— Dan Carter (@DanCarter) November 5, 2016

O'Gara had already posted that he wished he was with his fellow boys in green in Chicago celebrating:

"Oh to be an Irish rugby player today.. what a feeling..ye are some warriors..get up ye boyos.. gutted to be missing the session in Chicago," he tweeted.

Damn guttered to see the @AllBlacks lose but what a heck of a game congrats to Ireland for beating us for the first time. #IREvNZL

And the win has already caused strife in this household, where a wedding could be in jeopardy.

User Laura_M8 said: "Brother is marrying a New Zealander in December! Mother of the bride just sent this to my mother."

The post included a screen shot of a text conversation between said mother of the bride and her mother saying "the wedding is off... Steve has revoked his permission".

Most impressive thing about that performance, given our 18 game run v them, was how we picked it back up at 4pts ahead. Pure grit! #IREvNZL

Jesus, I tune into the rugby for 10 seconds and the bloody All-Blacks score a try. This is unbearable. #IREvNZL
