Locals and lifeguards helped firefighters battle a scrub fire for two hours at Piha Beach on Saturday afternoon.

A Northern Fire Communications spokesman said the fire, which was on Seaview Rd behind the local bowling club, started about 2.30pm.

"We have no indication what caused it. Our initial indication was that it would threaten nearby houses so a helicopter was put on standby but wasn't needed in the end."

Firefighters battled another scrub fire at Muriwai Beach yesterday afternoon. The cause of that fire is also unknown.
