Intoxicated teens arrested at Northland after ball

Up to 50 Northland teens flouted Whangarei's liquor bans at an after ball function in the city, with several arrested and five needing medical treatment for heavy intoxication.

The function was held at the Old Library in Whangarei on June 28.

Sergeant Howard Clement said between 40 and 50 young people were in the vicinity of the venue in the early hours of the morning, openly drinking alcohol in breach of the liquor ban.

"Many of these intoxicated people were trying to gain entry to the venue. Numerous incidents of minor disorder, intoxication and fights were dealt with by police," Mr Clement said.

"St John Ambulance staff also treated at least five heavily intoxicated young people, including one who was hospitalised."

The function was closed early by organisers due to people either drinking alcohol or being intoxicated or causing disorder.

The venue was damaged during the function.

Mr Clement said two young men were arrested for disorderly behaviour or breach of the peace, with several warned for breach of the liquor ban.

"Due to the number of people and incidents it was difficult for police and required eight staff working for nearly two hours to restore order and three ambulance staff an hour to assess and treat people involved," he said.

Police advise anyone wishing to organise high-risk events involving young people with the potential to be drinking alcohol to ensure they have the skills and resources to manage them safely, and to contact them and their local council early for advice.

Mr Clements said parents also need to take responsibility and ensure they know what their child is doing and that they are kept safe around events involving the potential for alcohol consumption and disorder.
