People caught entering New Zealand with undeclared goods which threaten biosecurity face instant $200 border fines from today.
The new fines apply to anyone found with undeclared fruit, plant or animal products.
The scheme was first put forward by the previous government and its introduction was accelerated following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Britain.
It was one of a number of measures implemented to increase biosecurity including changes to customs arrival forms and additional x-ray machines and sniffer dogs.
