Inspiring teacher for choral workshop

Wairarapa singers and aspiring singers can take part in a full-day group singing workshop in Carterton, with song leader Julian Raphael.

Mr Raphael is the musical director of the Wellington Community Choir, as well as several other choirs and singing groups.

As a music educator, performer and composer, he is the director of Community Music Junction, a Wellington organisation that promotes music participation.

"Music is everyone's birthright and an important form of expression for all humans," said Mr Raphael.

Caren Wilton of the Carterton Community Choir said it is a great chance to spend a day singing with a very talented teacher.

"Julian's teaching style is fantastically inspiring and encouraging. Even if you think you can't sing, by the end of the day you'll be amazed at how good you sound. And you'll have had a great time."

She said everyone is welcome at the workshop -- no musical experience required. It will focus on music from the world's cultures.

"We've been able to keep prices for the day low -- just $30 waged or $25 unwaged -- due to a grant from Trust House," said Ms Wilton.

Singers are also welcome at the weekly sessions of the Carterton Community Choir, which meets every Thursday from 7.15pm-9pm at Carterton School hall in Holloway St, she said.
