Inmate dies in Auckland prison

A prisoner has died at Auckland's Paremoremo Prison.

Auckland Prisons director Tom Sherlock confirmed in a statement issued to NZME News Service that an inmate died on Sunday morning.

The death was not thought to be suspicious.

"Attending staff gave medical attention, however, he was pronounced dead at the scene," Mr Sherlock said.

The coroner and Corrections would investigate the death, he said."

Any death that occurs in custody is a tragedy."

His next of kin have been informed.
