A young girl has died in a truck crash at a Taranaki intersection this afternoon while biking home from school.
Taranaki Highway Patrol Sergeant Allan Trow said the girl, aged 7 or 8, had died as a result of the crash at the corner of Rata St and Miro Stin the town of Inglewood, just before 3.30pm.
Her family have been advised and are receiving support from police, Trow said.
Inglewood Primary School principal Karen Patterson confirmed the girl had been cycling home from the school, which is near Miro St.
"It is with considerable sadness we advise one of our students was involved in a traffic accident on the way home from school on Wednesday afternoon," she said.
"Sadly she died at the scene. The accident is being investigated by the police."
"Our Inglewood Primary and wider school community extend our deepest sympathy to the family and close friends."

The Ministry of Education's Traumatic Incident Team is providing support and guidance to the staff, students and school community, Patterson said.
Trow said the truck involved in the crash was carrying stock food.
Emergency services were called about 3.30pm, a police spokeswoman said. At least three police cars are visible at the scene and a tent has been erected on the site of the accident.
Trow told Fairfax it appeared the truck had been turning out of Miro St and the girl had been riding along the footpath before the accident happened.
Miro St is closed to traffic and diversions are in place. Motorists are being asked to be patient as delays are expected.
Fire trucks are blocking a large section of State Highway 3 and fire crew members are directing all traffic off the main road.
The Serious Crash Unit has begun their investigation at the scene.
