Student art exhibitions
An art exhibition by students from intermediate schools in the Manukau-Franklin area runs until September 23 in the Nathan Homestead, Manurewa Community Arts Centre. Tangaroa College art students display their work at the Otara Music Arts Centre until September 28.
Free schools concerts
The first
of the Auckland Secondary Schools Band and Orchestra Showcase concerts is on tonight in the Auckland Town Hall, The Edge. The concert starts at 7 pm and admission is free.
Northpower trust
Nominations open today for the Northpower Electric Power Trust. Nomination forms are available from the Northpower Trust office, Porowini Ave, Whangarei, or by phoning the electoral office on 0800 922-822. Nominations close on Friday, October 5.
1080 pellet drop
From tomorrow the Department of Conservation will be dropping 1080-coated pellets in the Whirinaki Forest Park, east of Taupo, to help control possums. For details phone (07) 366-1080.
Another day ...
American swimmer Mark Spitz won his seventh gold medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, by helping his team win the 400m medley relay in world record time. Spitz, then aged 22, also set world records in the other six events in which he won gold. No other athlete has won so many gold medals at a single Olympics.
