Liquor licences
If you are holding an event over the festive season where liquor will be sold or supplied by you, apply soon for a special liquor licence. The types of events include Christmas functions in halls or parks. Allow 25 working days for your application to
be processed. The licences cost $63 and you need a plan of the location of the event, and to have the owner's consent. Apply through your local city or district council.
ER volunteers
St John Ambulance wants volunteers to reduce the pressure in the emergency rooms at Auckland Hospital and, later, at North Shore Hospital. The volunteers will be asked to work one four-hour shift a week, talking to patients and relatives who are waiting for attention. Phone 526-0527, ext 6103, if you can help.

Calligraphy exhibition

North Shore art
The Mairangi Arts Centre at 20 Hastings Rd, Mairangi Bay, is home to the North Shore City art awards until November 25. The works celebrate the New Zealand coastal environment. Call 478-2237 or visit Mairangi Arts' website.
Beach water quality
Before you go swimming this summer, call 0800 723-379 to check the water quality at the beach of your choice. More than 50 beaches will be tested, and results are available by Friday of each week, by calling the 0800 line.
AUT festival
