Weather

Cloudy and showery today, with a fairly strong southwesterly wind. Showers clear tomorrow and the wind eases. On Sunday it should be mostly fine.

Pollen forecast

Pollen from pine, alder, oak, elm, wattle and hazelnut trees is giving some people hayfever. Fungal spores are low. These can
cause asthma and allergies.

Sport

Tonight's NPC rugby game is also a Ranfurly Shield match, between shield holders Canterbury and Northland, at Jade Stadium. The game starts at 7.30pm. Other NPC matches this weekend are North Harbour v Otago at North Harbour Stadium at 2.30pm tomorrow, Southland v Auckland at 5.30pm in Invercargill and Wellington v Waikato in Wellington at 7.30pm. On Sunday Taranaki play Bay of Plenty at 2.30pm. All the games will be live on Sky Sport.

NRL rugby league qualifying finals see the Roosters play the Sharks at 9.30 tonight, live on Sky Sport. Tomorrow Brisbane play Parramatta, live on Sky Sport 2 at 7.30pm, and Newcastle take on St George/Illawarra, live on Sky Sport at 9.30pm.

On Sunday the Warriors play the Canberra Raiders at Ericsson Stadium at 3.30pm, and the game will be live on Sky 1. Go the Warriors.

Cricket already? It's only September. New Zealand and Australia eyeball each other in this ICC Champions Trophy match, live from Sri Lanka on Sky Sport at 4.25pm on Sunday.

Today

* The Going West Books and Writers Festival starts at 6pm in the Titirangi War Memorial Hall, South Titirangi Rd, when Marilyn Waring, the Topp Twins, Max Cryer and poet Glenn Colquhoun "Track the Vernacular". The show continues tomorrow and Sunday with writers including Lloyd Jones, Michael King and Elizabeth Knox. Tickets are available at the door.

Duncan Sarkies, of Scarfies fame, entertains with Wild Man Eyes tonight and tomorrow night at 9 in Titirangi Theatre, Lopdell House, Titirangi. Tickets available at the door, or by phoning 836-8000, ext 8780.

Word Up! is a jam session aimed at 13 to 20-year-olds and offers an opportunity for performers to express themselves through theatre, dance, poetry and comedy. It starts at 7pm today in the Corban Estate Arts Centre in Great North Rd, Henderson. Admission is $5 and you'll need your student photo ID.

Tomorrow the new Titirangi Community House in South Titirangi Rd is the venue for a huge book market, which includes demonstrations of book binding, repairing and printing.

* Brisbane-based kapa haka group Te Mana Wairua will perform at 5.30pm at Te Tahawai Marae, Edgewater College, Pakuranga. At 7pm the college hosts a multicultural festival in the school hall. Admission is $2. Both events are open to the public.

* The New Zealand Orchid Society is holding its annual Spring Show in the Mt Albert War Memorial Hall, on the corner of Wairere Ave and New North Rd from 10am to 5pm today and tomorrow and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. The show includes plant and flower sales and floral art displays. Admission is $5 adults, $4 for senior citizens and children are free.

* Hypnotist Dave Upfold offers fun for the family at 7.30pm today and tomorrow in the Rose Theatre, School Rd, Belmont. Tickets are $10 and $5. Book on 021-453-202.

* Baradene College's annual art exhibition and sale previews at the college, Victoria Ave, Remuera, at 7.30pm with wine and nibbles. Tickets are $20 from the college. Entry is free tomorrow and Sunday, from 10am to 4pm.

* Pack up granny or granddad and head to Whitcoulls at Botany Town Centre for a reading session that features stories about grandparents at 10am.

* The Auckland Philharmonia, conductor Marc Taddei and guests Tina Cross and Tim Beveridge get together for Symphony of Sails, a concert of classical and popular maritime music, at 7.30pm in the Aotea Centre. Phone 0800PHILHARMONIA (0800 744 542) to book.

* Epsom Methodist Church's Spring Festival opens today at noon in the church at Greenwoods Corner, with flowers, floral art and crafts. The show continues tomorrow from 10.30am to 5pm. Phone 625-7733 for details.

Tomorrow

* The Hazmobile, for the disposal of hazardous domestic waste, will be in the car park in Lloyd Elsmore Park, Sir Lloyd Drive, in Pakuranga from 10am to 2pm.

* Musica Sacra present a concert of Tudor music, featuring a consort of viols who will accompany the choir as well as playing alone. The concert starts at 7.30pm in St Michael's Church, Beatrice Rd, Remuera. Visit www.musicasacra.org.nz for details.

* The NZ Korean Film Society is screening Jakarta, a comic thriller about three teams of bank robbers who independently decide to rob the same bank at the same time. The film starts at 3pm in Building 12 of Unitec's School of Performing and Screen Arts (Entry 2 from Carrington Rd). It is in Korean with English subtitles and admission is free.

* An exhibition of classical antiquities from the Mediterranean includes sculpture, pottery, coins and other items of beauty. It is open at Kinder House, 2 Ayr St, Parnell from 10am to 4pm today and Sunday.

* An art and craft show is on at the ASB Stadium in Kohimarama Rd from 10am to 4pm today and Sunday. Phone 570-5076 for details.

Sunday

* The NZ Warbirds Association celebrate Battle of Britain Day today with a flypast over the Auckland Cenotaph at 11am. This is followed by an open day at Ardmore Airport from noon to 4pm, when the planes will be on display. For details phone 296-1535.

* The West Auckland Historical Society is leading a tour of the Corban Estate to learn more about the winery and the family who started it, from 10.30am. At 1.15pm you can visit the Corban family mausoleum at Waikumete Cemetery and discover other key West Auckland identities from the past. Bookings are essential, on 838-4455.

* Everything from gannets to beach access to stormwater disposal will be up for discussion at an open day at Muriwai on Sunday. Staff from Auckland Regional Council and Rodney District Council will be on hand from 10am to 4pm in front of the regional park headquarters to answer questions and discuss Muriwai Regional Park and other planning issues. All welcome.

* It is Medieval Day at Auckland Museum, where the mayhem includes live performances, costumed characters, storytelling, music, games and talks. Feel free to go along dressed as your favourite character. Events run from 10am to 5pm.

* The Vintage Jazz Band has a gig at the Old Bayswater Boating Club Hall in Sir Peter Blake Drive, Bayswater, at 7.30pm. The music is preceded by the Vintage Jazz Society's annual meeting at 6.30pm, with drinks and finger food at 6pm.

* Lyric soprano Diana Higbee sings opera in the Concert Chamber of the Auckland Town Hall at 6pm. Book at Ticketek on 307-5000.

* Michael Joel conducts St Matthew's Chamber Orchestra and guest cellist Ben Nation in a concert at 2.30pm in St Matthew-in-the-city, Hobson St, Auckland. Admission is $20 adults, $15 seniors, $10 students and $5 children, and door sales are available. Phone 308-0147 for details.

* Go organic and turn your garden into a haven for healthy produce. Plant conservation officer Steve Benham explains safe pest, disease and weed control, companion planting, lunar gardening and more at the Auckland Regional Botanic Gardens from 10am to 1pm. Bookings are essential, on 267-1457.

* A discussion of Darwinian theory will be held at the Milford Baptist Church in Dodson Ave, Milford. Investigator and publisher Ian Wishart will present his views and there will be an opportunity for questions and debate from the floor. The meeting starts at 7pm, and everyone is welcome.
