Fiji's military chief, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, shares a laugh with Milika Ulvinakavadra, wife of hostage and former Minister for Home Affairs Gioji Ulvinakavadra, during a meeting with the families of the hostages and the military at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Suva.

Negotiations between the military, the Fiji Great Council of Chiefs and attempted coup leader George Speight are continuing. Speight has said that a resolution to the crisis and the release of the 31 hostages could be settled by the end of the week.
