Internet provider ihug says it has resolved the junk email problem that crippled its system and caused havoc for thousands of its customers.
Spokeswoman Cherie Lacey said yesterday that the problem had been fixed and the backlog of delayed emails had been cleared.
"[It's] all fixed. Inbound and
outbound email is resolved. Things were back to normal by Sunday morning as far as I know. The emails are all definitely going through okay."
However, one customer complained to the Herald on Monday that his email still wasn't working.
He said he had tried calling the support desk several times and was put on hold. "It gets a bit tedious after a while," he said. Junk email has been causing problems for internet users and service providers since October 28.
Junk email disguised as images bypassed the ihug filter, overloading the system.
As a result, around 20,000 ihug customers had their mail delayed by 24 hours, Ms Lacey said.
"There's also been one or two cases where it seems emails have been lost rather than just delayed ... email is not a guaranteed service ... at times they just do get lost."
She said the company wasn't expecting any more problems.
"We installed new software into our spam-filtering systems so that they could recognise the new image-based spam and then we also installed eight new mail servers."
