A man was hit and killed by a train in Lower Hutt last night.
Emergency services were called to the Hutt River Rail Bridge about 8pm, after an unidentified man was struck on the southbound commuter train side of the tracks, police said.
The man suffered "multiple extreme injuries tohis body", and died at the scene.
Police are investigating the incident and the man's death has been referred to the Coroner.
The man is described as Maori or Polynesian, aged mid-to-late thirties, about 175cm-tall, and of solid build. He was unshaven, with dread-lock hair, and was wearing dark track pants and a black t-shirt.
Anyone with information about the man or the circumstances surrounding his death should contact the duty Senior Sergeant at the Lower Hutt Police Station, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
The death comes only a week after a 68-year-old man died after he was struck by a train at Lower Hutt's Wingate Station.
