Hutt Valley man accused of intentionally injuring baby faces court

A man has been charged after allegedly causing serious injuries to a baby in the Hutt Valley.

Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Wescott said a 30-year-old man was arrested and charged after a baby was found with unexplained injuries.

Police were called to an address in Avalon about 8am Thursday after a report of a disorder.

Upon arrival, officers were made aware of a baby who had allegedly been intentionally injured, Wescott said.

The baby was transported to hospital by ambulance in a serious condition.

The 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene. He is due to reappear in Hutt Valley District Court on December 1.

He was charged with four counts of injures with intent to injure.

“We would like to thank members of the community who are supporting the family and who have come forward with information already,” Wescott said.

Police said they would like to speak to anyone else who may have information in relation to the incident or anyone who witnessed any unusual behaviour.

Hutt Valley Area Commander Inspector Wade Jennings said they reminded the community that concerns about harm could be reported not only by whānau living in a house, but by anyone who suspected or witnessed concerning behaviour.
