Hunting dogs attack greyhound on Auckland beach

A dog is fighting for its life after being mauled by three other dogs on Orewa Beach.

Police were called to the scene near Kohu St at 6.35pm following the attack.

A police spokeswoman said the three hunting dogs escaped from a cage on the back of a ute before running down the beach and attacking a pet greyhound.

The greyhound was taken to the vet who told police it was "not in good shape" but would live.

Animal control has seized the three dogs and the owner is co-operating with police, a police spokeswoman said.

Police are working with the owner of the dog that was attacked.

Auckland Council will decide the fate of the dogs police said.
