Hunter shoots himself in foot

A Waikato hunter was airlifted out of the bush overnight after accidentally shooting himself in the foot.

The hunter and his friend were at a hut in bush south east of Turangi, when they set off their emergency beacon, Youthtown Trust Rescue Helicopter pilot Hendry de Waal said.

The pair were sitting on a river bed and as one of them got up to return to the hut he accidently pulled his gun's trigger and shot himself through the left foot.

He was flown to Waikato Hospital for treatment.
