Hundreds take to the waters for Auckland regatta

The Waitemata Harbour has come alive today with boats of every shape and size taking to the water to celebrate Auckland Anniversary Day.

Boats began streaming out onto the harbour from around 9am and while most headed out into Hauraki Gulf, others were content to zip back and forth taking in the sights.

New Zealand Herald Regatta organising committee chairman John Smart said entries for the day's races were still coming in as late as 11pm last night.

Nearly 500 boats have registered in total with over a thousand spectator vessels also vying for a position amongst the waves.

Navy frigate Te Kaha anchored just offshore to act as one of the regatta markers, with its well-dressed guests being treated to a lavish lunch and all-day entertainment.

On-shore activities are also expected to attract thousands of Aucklanders to Okahu Bay Domain, Mission Bay and Woodall Park.
