KAIKOHE - Kawakawa's unique main street public toilet building designed by the late Frederick Hundertwasser has won the premier Creative Places Award for 2000.
The colourful ceramic creation is the only building in the Southern Hemisphere to have been completed by the acclaimed Austrian architect and artist.
Hundertwasser's building, which
was opened last December, was commissioned by the Far North District Council during a project started by the local Kawakawa community board. The council owns the building.
It was described by Creative New Zealand chairman Peter Biggs as "a clear winner" of both the premier and the Urban and Landscape Design categories of the 2000 awards.
Hundertwasser died earlier this year not long after his building was opened.
Other award winners were: Art awards and art events: Auckland City Council for Music in the Parks.
Commissions for public art projects: Auckland City Council for the Millennium Mural Project.
Festivals: Hutt City Council for RESPECT.
Arts support and development initiatives: Gore District Council for Gore Council Arts and Heritage Precinct.
