Flames that destroyed a Takapuna tyre warehouse and neighbouring motorbike accessory shop could be seen throughout Auckland tonight.
The tyre-fuelled blaze ripped through Sportspro Racing and Cycletreads in Barrys Point Rd, but it was contained by thick fire walls on the two-storey building.
Flames could be seen from
Auckland's waterfront.
No one was in the building. Twelve fire trucks fought the blaze after the Fire Service was alerted at 9.20pm.
North Shore Chief Fire Officer Denis O'Donoghue commended the owner of the building at 71 Barrys Point Rd for installing fire walls, which take four hours to burn.
Mr O'Donoghue said it was too early to tell whether the fire was suspicious.
Sportspro Racing manager Ian Standring told the Herald that staff had checked the whole building before they left work.
