The latest player hoping to make some big bucks off the frenzied Auckland property market is a school.
Massey High will auction a two-bedroom bungalow at a gala day next month, with all profits destined to go to a foundation for its students.
Kumeu businessman Craig Walker donated the 65sqm house as a way of giving back to the institution he attended as a founding student in 1969.
"Business has been OK to me and I don't personally want for anything. I have a good family and drive around in a nice motor car and live in a nice house so it's a good way to help out," Mr Walker said.
"It's important to be supportive of youth and to make a better society. I like to help the community in positive ways."
Mr Walker, who owns Craig Walker Building Removals, will deliver the house to anywhere in the Auckland region for a reduced fee of $5000, which will also go to the Massey High School Foundation. The new owner would pay for amenity connection.
School development manager Jacob Bish said the house would be a perfect bach. It was small enough to act as a secondary dwelling on a property. While it was 20 years old, it still had a good bathroom, kitchen and laundry and had been painted, with new carpet and lino.
A reserve was yet to be set, but the school was hopeful to sell the house on auction day. It was holding a gala event before bidding, with stalls and a bouncy castle, to attract a crowd on March 28 to the school.
