Metservice meteorologist Rob Kerr said while there was light showers in Tasman District this morning, only 1.6mm of rain was recorded at Nelson Airport, meaning the area is still pretty dry.
Winds are expected to stay light and variable in the area until around 10.30am, after which MetService says a sea breeze is likely to develop into a southwesterly this evening and may gust up to 40 to 50 km/h at times overnight.
Temperatures are expected to sit around 25-26C until the weekend.
The general weather pattern over New Zealand out to Friday is also expected to see warm to hot temperatures across much of the country.
While a front is now making its way over the North Island, bringing isolated showers, fine spells will follow the front as it moves eastwards.
"In the next few hours it will break up and become quite fine... but there is still a chance of light showers later in the day," Kerr said.
"Otherwise there is a broad ridge over much of the North Island, and it is going to be quite a warm day with plenty of temperatures up around the high 20s.
"It is a similar story for tomorrow, perhaps even a little bit warmer as that ridge hangs on over the North Island."
Kerr said a few main centres may hit 30C tomorrow.
"Over the South Island, another front has brought a spattering of showers across the region overnight and through this morning," Kerr said.
"There is a chance of some showers around the inland parts of Dunedin, Otago, Clutha, and Southland but other than that it should clear up to be quite a nice day."
The front is expected to move over Fiordland from the south Tasman Sea overnight tonight, and may bring strong northerly winds and a period of heavy rain to Fiordland and Westland.
It will be reasonably warm for most places in the South Island as well, particularly those centres on the northern half of the island. Christchurch may even reach 30C, with temperatures in the mid 20s for Queenstown and Wanaka.
