Two horses are on the loose on a major road north of Auckland this morning.

Motorists were warned travel slowly in the area after two horses escaped from a paddock and were seen running down Kahikatea Flat Road in Dairy Flat.

Police said they were headed to the area to monitor traffic.

At this stage it was hoped to find the owner before bring in animal control.
