The car that hit and killed a Wellington woman last night may have been racing another car at the time of the accident, police said today.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was found lying in a street in Lower Hutt, about 10.15 pm.
An ambulance was called, but the
woman, thought to be Maori and aged about 30, died at the scene.
Detective Sergeant Murray Porter was quoted in today's Evening Post newspaper as saying witnesses saw two cars travelling at high speed along Oxford Tce, between 10pm and 10.15pm.
"It is possible the two cars were racing each other," he said.
A resident living near the scene told the Evening Post "speeding cars were a real problem along Oxford Tce" and likened the street to a race track.
Police said the car was dark coloured with rounded features and closely followed by a white vehicle.
Police want to talk to anyone who was in the area between 10 pm and 10.15 pm last night.
