Police have opened a homicide investigation after a baby boy died in Auckland.

The 10-week-old baby was taken to Pukekohe Maternity Hospital in a critical condition on January 2, where staff alerted police, Detective Inspector Karen Bright said.

The baby was taken to Starship children’s hospital in Auckland, where it was found he had “non-survivable” injuries.

“Tragically, the baby passed away at the hospital on Wednesday.”

A 27-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man have been jointly charged with ill treatment/neglect of a child.

Both will reappear in Manukau District Court on May 8.

“The investigation remains ongoing and further charges are being considered,” Bright said.

The name of the child and the pair charged are currently suppressed.

“As the matter is before the court, police are unable to comment further.”
