Holiday traffic at a standstill

Traffic was heavy as expected on both the Northern and Southern Motorways as people returned to Auckland at the end of Labour weekend.

SH2 was at a standstill yesterday afternoon with a long line of traffic stretching from the Bombay Hills to Maramarua.

Ewart Barnsley, from the New Zealand Transport Agency, said traffic flowed well north of Auckland as the Toll Road helped to alleviate congestion.

Inspector Cornell Kluessian of the police northern communications centre said overall it was business as usual on the region's roads.

But a yacht that fell off a trailer just south of Warkworth caused some delay for travellers.
