Wairarapa are through to the quarter-finals at the Hatch Cup national primary schoolboy hockey tournament in Auckland.
They will complete their programme in pool play today but their 3-0 victory over Taranaki yesterday maintained their unbeaten record of five wins in as many matches and guaranteed them a top eight spot.
Taranaki
were expected to provide stern opposition for Wairarapa but the latter took control early in the match and never relinquished their grip.
In fact, they created so many prime scoring opportunities that a win by six or seven goals would have provided a better indication of the run of play.
Outstanding forward Shane Hodgkiss scored two of the Wairarapa goals with the other going to Ryan Pauling.
Wairarapa plays Northland today and a win there would see them as the only unbeaten team in their pool.
Among sides who have been showing excellent form in other pools are Canterbury, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato.
