A bomb scare at the British High Commission turned out to be a hoax, after a two and a half-hour search found no explosives in the Wellington building.
Wellington police Sergeant Nigel Bullock said police were making inquiries into the source of the scare .
It is believedseveral messages were received overnight at an old email account at the high commission.
It is understood the emails said there was an acid-activated bomb at the commission. Because the messages came from overseas addresses known for spam, it is believed staff at the high commission did not take them too seriously.
However, police were called and a small section of Hill Street, where the high commission is situated, was cordoned off at 10.15am today.
A spokeswoman for Sacred Heart School in Guildford Tce, which runs off Hill Street, said the school had been advised police were investigating a bomb scare.
Staff at the high commission remained in the building as a police specialist search group conducted a section-by-section search of the building.
