His grieving family are preparing to hold a blessing at the site of the tragedy and front a media conference where his mother and sister would speak.
This morning Avondale College principal Brent Lewis paid tribute to the Year 13 pupil saying the school community was left stunned as news spread of his tragic death.
"It's horrendous and we're all deeply unhappy," said Lewis.
"He was a very lively and lovely young man who was outgoing and a person of social influence among his peers."
Jacob was set to return for his final year at the West Auckland college where he was enthusiastically studying technology.
He wanted to pursue a career in automative and mechanical engineering.
Lewis also confirmed the student had a hearing impairment.
He said many students had contacted the school this morning shocked as news spread of the likeable teens death.
The college's head of technology, Neil Bartlett, described Jacob as a hardworking, smart student focused on an automative career.
"He was just one of those really nice kids in the class that created a good climate and made everyone happy."
The death would shake the close-knit department that had appreciated his practical ability and enthusiasm, he said.
Police were back at Rua Rd this morning going door-to-door looking for people who heard or saw anything on Saturday night.
Despite a public appeal the driver still had not come forward.
Inquiries were continuing to identify and locate the person responsible, said police.
They were also gathering and reviewing CCTV footage in the area and appealed to residents who had CCTV cameras on their properties to contact them.
Several members of the public had provided information which was being assessed.
Police said the victim's family had been left devastated by the tragedy.
They declined to comment when approached by the Herald this morning.
Grieving family members gathered at the crash scene yesterday to place flowers.
They would be returning to Rua Rd which would be closed after 2.20pm for a blessing.
Cousin Jessica Kaulima posted to Facebook that she was "feeling heartbroken". She said Jacob would be missed by many.
"Words can't express how I'm hurting right now. To find out of your passing last night breaks my heart."
A former neighbour of the teen described him as "a humble kid".
"He was my neighbour for nine years, I watched him grow up ... oh man, it's just so raw."
Pakura was on his way to meet the man's nephew and other young people when he was killed. The group waited for several hours for him to arrive, but he never did.
They heard the terrible news the following morning, the man said.
"All the kids are shattered. This kid was so well loved."
A friend of the Avondale College student said Pakura had a good vibe about him. They met in class in Year 9 and were meant to be doing Year 13 together this year. He said they were always talking in automotive class.
"He was a cool dude, always a good vibe talking with him but yeah gonna miss the little homie around."
Detective Inspector John Sutton confirmed the teen was the victim of a hit-and-run.
"The scene has been examined by members of the serious crash unit and police have been conducting door-to-door inquiries," he said.
"Police are appealing to the driver of the vehicle, or anyone who knows who the driver is, to come forward.
"Police are also asking for any family members, mechanics, panel beaters or handy person who has been asked to fix a vehicle which could have been involved in a crash overnight, or if the driver appears suspicious, to come forward."
