HAPPY TO BE HERE: Megan Horsham says feet are often the most neglected part of the body.
It's a good thing Megan Horsham chose to return to Masterton and further her health career because it's for benefit of the whole community.
Megan is a foot care assistant for The Masterton Foot Clinic, which offers clients a variety of podiatry services, and is helping soothe away the achesand pains for many locals and educate them about foot health.
"Our feet are often the most neglected part of the body and, if they aren't treated right, they can cause a lot of people pain and discomfort," said Megan, who took up the new role earlier this year.
"With an ageing population it's amazing how many people do need help with their feet due to mobility issues, a disability or other medical problems and that's where I come in."
Megan offers nail cutting and massage services as well as assist her podiatry colleagues with gait analysis. She says her job is about making people feel comfortable and educating them about basic foot care.
It is also an extension of her health career that began when she completed a health science degree through Massey University.
"I've always been interested in health from a young age and worked many years as a smoke-free health promoter in Wellington and Dunedin. Since returning to the region, this role was especially created by Adam Philps (Foot Clinic business owner and lead podiatrist) and it's been great to see the positive change in people we've worked with so far. Where once they would come into the clinic in pain and be unhappy they are now pain free and smiling."
Born and raised in Wairarapa, Megan has enjoyed returning to her roots. She loves spending time in her garden and has become ensconced in the community, volunteering her time to do floral arrangements for Hospice Wairarapa and doing other volunteer work in the health sector. When she's not meeting the health needs of others, Megan enjoys taking time out for herself, practising yoga and being creative.
"I never thought I'd end up living back here but I'm more than happy living here now," she said.
"A city can be a lonely place to live at times, but there's a great community feeling here and a willingness for people to be part of it and that really appeals to me."
