Self-confessed petrol heads have put their shoulder to the wheel to help Masterton Motorplex on its way to launching drag racing from its new drag strip at Solway.
A group of contractors who share a love of motor sport have banded together to work without pay, developing a road intothe complex from Manaia Rd, a distance of 1.2km.
Masterton contractor Steve Carlsen has been excavating the path the road is to take using his digger, John Simpson arrived from Hastings with his truck to cart metal for road construction, and Neil Macdonald fronted up from Mangatainoka bringing a grader.
Others who have joined the ranks of the volunteers have been Kerran Oliver, Todd Johnson, Murray Weston and Kerry Martin.
Masterton Motorplex chairman Bob Wilton said the drag racing fraternity was "really thankful" for the support shown by the unpaid workers.
He said the level of help had been " totally unexpected" and could not have come at a better time.
Savings of around $50,000 had been achieved and helped Masterton Motorplex push on towards its first open meet on the new strip, planned for February 15 and 16.
Before that weekend, a "test and meet" will be held for dragsters on January 18 and 19, and other meetings planned for next year include a Central Nationals meet in early March and a Nostalgia meet in mid April.
