Russian Alexander Tishkovets has been sent many offers of donations and accommodation by people appalled he is sleeping on the street while he waits for the Immigration Service to send him home.
But Mr Tishkovets could not be contacted yesterday and the Grove Hostel for refugees in Sandringham was
unable to tell him about the outpourings of sympathy.
About 20 people phoned the Herald offering rooms in their homes, food and donations.
Lawyer Colin Amery, who represented Mr Tishkovets during his application for refugee status, said he was appalled that the Immigration Service had not dealt with the situation since Mr Tishkovets' refugee appeal process ended three months ago.
He said the delay had practically made the Russian a de facto resident.
Immigration spokesman Ian Smith said yesterday that the delay was caused because the service had not received Mr Tishkovets' travel documents and passport from Moscow.
