Talented Gladstone utility back Cameron Hayton has been on a scoring spree in the Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Football Union's Chris Kapene Memorial Cup competition.
Hayton, who made the national Heartland squad last season, has already cracked the century of points, sitting on 102. Pioneer halfback Joseph Thompson is next bestwith 85 while Martinborough inside back Tipene Haira has 60.
Hayton is also sharing the try-scoring honours. Both he and Tavita Issac (Greytown) have touched down on nine occasions and there are two players with six tries to their credit, Sean Robinson (Pioneer) and Ben Holmes (East Coast).
There is still one series of matches remaining before the Kapene Cup competition is completed but last season's Tui Cup premiership winners, Greytown, are guaranteed the title. They have amassed 33 points, eight more than Martinborough on 25. Then come Gladstone 23, East Coast 20, Eketahuna 18, Pioneer 17, Carterton 10, Marist 5 and Bush Sports 3. Greytown have also scored the most tries for good measure, 36.
Meanwhile there were 41 people present, including 16 voting delegates, at the annual meeting of the Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Union. Marist stalwart Eric Kenny was reappointed patron with Rex Playle elected president and Richard Dahlberg as his deputy. Board members are chief executive officer Tony Hargood, Catherine Rossiter-Stead, Tim Nathan, Fergus Rutherford, Paora Ammunson, Tim Fairbrother, Dennis Dougherty and NZRFU representative John Kirkup.
The 16 voting delegates at the meeting adopted the new constitution as part of the NZRU loan agreement and also accepted the proposal for the Bush Rugby Football Club to join the WBRFU. Appointment of auditors is to be reviewed by the board.
Sir Brian Lochore spoke of his delight at becoming patron and life member of the NZRU and offered his sincere thanks to the WBRFU and everyone else involved in his nomination.
