A man accused of murdering his wife in the small beach settlement of Haumoana, near Hastings, last month, made a brief appearance in Hastings District Court today.
Eastern Police District crime services manager Detective Inspector Godfrey Watson said Sydney Wayne Hesketh, a 64-year-old sickness beneficiary from Hastings, was arrested and charged
today.
Hesketh was remanded in custody without plea until January 15.
His lawyer Jonathan Krebs did not seek bail, but indicated he might make a bail application at Hesketh's next appearance.
Hesketh is accused of murdering Adrienne Pamela Hesketh on or about December 15.
Hesketh, wearing a polo-type blue shirt and brown pants, and with both wrists bandaged, leaned on the dock during the short hearing.
At least six family members were present in court.
Hesketh was pulled from a blazing garage at a Haumoana house on December 15 moments before his 64-year-wife's body was found inside an adjacent house.
