Another of the club trophies was decided at Carterton last Saturday, March 26.
The third and final round of the men's Tararua Trophy - a best two of three stableford rounds event - was played on Saturday. At the end of the day, the clear winner of the trophy, with 85
points from his two counting rounds was Barry Hare.
This was a very popular win as, not too long ago, it looked as though Barry's golfing days were over and every member of the club is pleased to see Barry competing successfully again.
In the stableford competition of the day Dean Schaef turned in the day's best total of 41 points to win the higher handicap group.
Graham Hutchby, with 39 points, was second in that group and Stew White, with 36, third.
R.O.Bentley filled fourth slot just one point further back.
The lower handicap group was won by Karl Churchward, with 40 points, but only on countback from Jeremy Ross on the same score.
Both Nigel Bain and Lance Sayer compiled 39 points while Daniel Schmid filled fifth place with his 38 point score.
The Marquis of Normanby Hotel Men's Nearest the Pin contest on hole 15 was won by Ash Braggins and the men's "All Teed Up" ball by Lance Sayer.
Three men - Daniel Schmid, R O Bentley and Stew White - achieved holes in two.
WOMEN - SATURDAY:
The competition for women last Saturday was an L.G.U. round, counting for the Robson Cup, together with a putting competition.
The silver division competition was won by Jeanne Taylor with 74 nett with Val Willis, on 76 nett, in second place.
Honey Presow won the bronze division, also with 74 nett, and Honey was also the winner of the day.
Chris Taylor filled second place in the bronze division with 75 nett while Lesley Sadler, with 80 nett, filled third place in that division.
Shirley Carew won the putting competition and the nearest the pin contest was won by Caral Rink.
Chris Taylor was the only woman to achieve a hole in two.
SUNDAY:
The Easter Sunday event was a par round in which Emma Wills was a clear winner with her score of plus four beating her father, David Wills, into second place. David was one down as also was Matt Casey.
Lyn Evans rounded out the prize winners with his two down score.
Both Lyn Evans and Jeanne Taylor scored holes in two.
MONDAY:
A mini tournament was played on Easter Monday with prizes supplied by Clareville Nurseries which, of course, means that many of the winners will have reminders of their success for years to come.
Jeanne Taylor won the women's division with her 39 point total from Lyn Andrews, on 37, Chris Taylor, on 36, and Honey Presow, on 35.
Both Corrie van Zanten and Sue Ross scored 34 points.
The group one men were headed by Jeremy Ross, with his 41 points total.
Three players - Daniel Schmid, Bill Dickson and Paul Mallia - all scored 40 and Russ Sadler filled fifth slot with his 38 point score.
The group two men were headed by Graham Hutchby with the day's best score of no less than 47 points!
Wayne Taylor's 43 points was good enough for second place with John Braiden third on 41 and both Ian Gordon and Peter Mallitte scored 40 points.
Nearest the Pin prizes went to Paul Mallia, hole 9, Barry Bentley, hole 12, and Lyn Andrews, hole 15.
Six players - David Sadler, Grant Smith, Craig Andrews, Dean Schaef, Mark Graham and Lyn Andrews - all scored holes in two.
WOMEN WEDNESDAY:
An L.G.U. round was the order of the day on Wednesday, March 23, with both the silver and the bronze divisions being won with 70 nett scores.
Barbara Birchall won the silver division with D Stewart in second place, on 72 nett.
Corrie van Zanten finished third in that division.
The bronze division was won by Shirley Carew with her 70 nett score but only on countback from Pauline Craig.
Mary Edwards and Flo Watkins both finished on nett 73.
Longest drives were achieved by D. Stewart, Lesley Sadler and Sue Braiden while both Barbara Birchall and Shirley Carew scored holes in two.
NANCY MACCORMICK:
The leading scores in the womens' Nancy MacCormick competition were Mary Edwards and Honey Presow, with 135.5, Val Willis and Pauline Craig, with 139.5, and Natalie Mallitte and Flo Watkins, with 143.5.
VETERANS - TUESDAY:
A Nassau stroke competition was played by the veterans group on Tuesday, March 29.
Russ Morgan was declared the winner of the eighteen hole competition with his nett 67, but only by lot from Bob Walker. Bill Shakespeare filled third place with 70.
John Lett won the first nine holes competition with a nett 34 from both Pat Carew and Jim Douglas, on 36.
The second nine was headed by Garry Smith, with a nett 30, from Cyril Burling, on 31, and Joe Skillcorn, on 33.
Ian Brinkworth was nearest the pin on hole 15.
FOOTNOTE:
The new lakes on the course are already claiming their share of wayward shots.
Last Saturday the lake beside the sixth green claimed at least one ball but not, as you would expect, as a result of an errant approach to the sixth green.
No, on this occasion a good, long tee shot from the fifth tee has the most undesired result of a wet ball.
Who was the player? Well TC is a good clue, but I must hasten to say that it was not Trevor Clayton! Trevor is not yet able to come back to golf. We all hope that he soon will.
