Police are hunting two men who forced their way into a Napier house last night and attacked two people with a hammer and iron bar.
The men broke into the Waitangi Road, Awatoto, property about 9pm.
They assaulted the 19-year-old occupant, who received "significant" injuries requiring immediate medical attention, Detective Sergeant Emmet Lynch said.
They then attacked and seriously injured a visitor who had arrived at the house unexpectedly.
Mr Lynch said the offenders then left the house and ran toward Te Awa Avenue, where they may have had a car parked in the area.
He said the motive for the attack was unclear and he appealed for anyone who may have information about the attack to come forward.
