Local athletes also shine on trackWairarapa achieved several top three placings at the North Island secondary schools track and field championships held at the Pugh Sports Bowl in Masterton last weekend.

Provisional results were released yesterday after being delayed because of electronic timing hassles and they showed while Wairarapa's best success came in field events they also made an impact on the track.

Wairarapa shone in the hammer throw where Emma Kruszona won the intermediate girls title, Tom Quinn was runner-up for the senior boys crown and Josephine Surridge was third in the senior girls section. A third placing was recorded by Katie Smith in the senior girls shot put.

Wairarapa athlete Kate Plimmer showed her versatility with a second in the senior girls long jump and third in the 100m hurdles while Keelan Ward had a second in the AWD (athletes with disabilities) 100m and and a third in the 200m events.

Sprinters Finn Yeats (intermediate boys) and Sian Chapman (senior girls) excelled in their 100m finals, both finishing fourth, and after winning his heat of the senior boys 400m, Edward Hewitt too was fourth in the final. There was also strong performances from Alison Andrews-Paul and Tessa Laven over the middle distances, Andrews-Paul being fourth in the final of the intermediate girls 800m and Laven fifth in the senior girls 800m.
