Multi-sport legend Steve Gurney has today admitted a charge of careless driving, after smashing into a speeding train at a level crossing.
The nine-time Coast to Coast champion pleaded guilty to the charge via a letter to the court today.
Gurney, 48, did not appear in person at Rangiora DistrictCourt this morning, instead sending a letter to the court outlining his guilty plea.
A court source told APNZ that Gurney is now being considered for the diversion scheme, which means the first offender will avoid formal court prosecution.
He will next appear at Rangiora courthouse registrar's office on January 25 where it is likely he will be granted diversion.
Gurney was interviewed by police after he miraculously walked away with only minor injuries when his top-of-the-range Subaru Outback 4WD smashed into an early-morning passenger train at a railway crossing near Rangiora on September 20.
The train driver and passengers escaped uninjured.
He has spoken of his "disappointment'' at being charged, claiming that the crash was simply a "mistake'' and a "blur.''
