An armed intruder tasered by police in an Auckland gun shop today, wanted to be shot, the owner of the store says.
Police were called after the intruder, believed to be armed with a knife, entered the Small Arms International Gun Shop in Penrose - the scene of
a shooting incident a year ago.
Officers arrived around 11.30am and used pepper spray on the man, who is in his thirties, but it was ineffective.
A Taser stun gun was then used on him and he was captured and taken into custody.
Ray Carvell, the shop's owner, said the man had a 25cm knife and said he wanted to be shot.
Staff told him that would not happen and he could get help. They also told him police were on their way.
Detective Inspector Bernie Hollewand said the man was responsive and talking after the stun gun was used but he would be checked by medical staff.
Greg Carvell had a firearms charge dismissed against him after shooting a machete wielding attacker in the stomach at the same shop last July.
He was not at the store at the time of today's incident but arrived with his family afterwards.
Shop staff had engaged the man in conversation until police arrived. It is understood he did not cross the counter.
No force was used by staff during the incident.
The alleged intruder was taken to Auckland Central police station and was likely to face charges.
