Grieving parents blame fake Kiwi doctor Zholia Alemi for their autistic son's death

The family of an autistic man who drowned in the bath say he could still be alive today if a fake Kiwi psychiatrist who used a bogus degree to work for the NHS for 22 years had done her job properly.

Darren King, 31, died last year after having a seizure in a bath at his home in Lowestoft, Suffolk. He was living independently while under the care of New Zealander Zholia Alemi, who was working for the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT).

King's family have now claimed Alemi refused their requests to do a capacity test examining the risks of him living alone. They were concerned about him using a bath as he sometimes did not take his drugs to stop seizures, the Daily Mail reports.

"He needed an assessment around his understanding of his medication along with alcohol and the seizures which he didn't know he was having," his father, Gavin, told the BBC. "We wanted the bath removed."

"We have lost a good son. He is in a safe place now.

"We haven't got to worry about him, but someone shouldn't be allowed to turn up and say 'I am a doctor' and just carry on as if they are.

"There are too many people out there who are vulnerable and need these people."

Darren's father, said he found the psychiatrist "a very obnoxious person" who failed to provide the care his son needed.

"We kept trying to tell her that he didn't understand when he had an epileptic fit. She more or less just ignored it," he told the Eastern Daily Press.

"She wasn't engaged in doing anything we asked, there was no standard of care at all."

The grieving father said him and his wife were distraught when they found she was a fraud.

"We were just totally dismayed - my wife has been in bits and has needed time off work again, he said.

"We can't say he wouldn't have died from a seizure, but he wouldn't have drowned.

"I just can't believe in this day and age someone got away with this. It's unbelievable."

Alemi, 56, claimed to have a degree from the University of Auckland in New Zealand when she came to work in the UK in 1992.

Last month, she was jailed for five years after eventually being found out when she was convicted of trying to fake the will of an elderly female patient.

Her deception was discovered by the News and Star newspaper in Cumbria after she was convicted of trying to fake the will of an elderly woman to steal her £1.3 million (NZ$2.4m) fortune.

But nobody at the General Medical Council, the watchdog responsible for vetting the background of medics, checked whether her documentation was genuine.

At that time, doctors from certain Commonwealth countries could be cleared to start work simply by presenting their qualifications, without sitting any assessments.

It meant that for more than two decades from 1995, Alemi was free to treat thousands of mental health patients in the NHS, apparently prescribing medicine, making assessments and even sectioning some of the most vulnerable in society.

She worked as a locum consultant psychiatrist for the NSFT between 2014 and 2015, mainly looking after disabled adults and children.

A spokesman for the trust said: "All the appropriate checks had been undertaken by the GMC and by the agency through which we employed Zholia Alemi before she joined NSFT.

"Our trust terminated her contract as a result of safeguarding concerns and reported her to the GMC."

Alemi could have earned up to £100,000 (NZ$190,000) a year as an NHS psychiatrist. She enjoyed the trappings of wealth – buying bottles of expensive champagne as investments and driving a red Lotus Elise sports car.

It is understood that when she came here from New Zealand, Alemi showed officials a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery certificate.

In reality, her only qualification was a degree in human biology.

The GMC admitted its checks had been inadequate and confirmed an 'urgent investigation' was looking into the backgrounds of 3,000 doctors who came to work from Commonwealth countries, before 2003, in the same way.

Incredibly, Alemi had been investigated and given an official warning by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service in 2012 after failing to disclose a conviction for careless driving.

She also sectioned psychiatric patients for treatment without the authority to do so, and was banned from working for 12 months as a consequence.

Despite this, no one thought to examine her background or the reliability of her qualifications.

One woman, who claimed one of her relatives had been poorly treated by the fake psychiatrist, wrote on Facebook: "The way she (Alemi) treated my relative was appalling and now that I find she was not a qualified psychiatrist, and was allowed to treat patients for 22 years, I am beyond livid."

Joyce Robins, of Patient Concern, said it seemed "incredible" that someone could slip through the net in such a fashion.

She added: "There definitely needs to be a public inquiry – how many patients will she have come into contact with? Patients will be horrified that the proper checks weren't in place."

GMC chief executive Charlie Massey said the doctors being checked represented just 1 per cent of the 300,000 medics on the register and that vetting was much more rigorous today than it was in the 1990s.

But he admitted: "It is extremely concerning that a person used a fraudulent qualification to join the register."

King's inquest will be held in January.
