The man, who asked not to be named, said the last person to see or speak to Berrington was her adult daughter.
"She's quite upset, obviously."
An official search and rescue team made up of police officers, local volunteers and members of the public are also searching suburban areas in and around Wellington.
Police urged anyone who may have seen her in the last two days to get in touch immediately, given Berrington's condition.
"Mary has a degree of mental impairment and suffers bi-polar, so may not be in a position to help herself at the moment," a statement said.
"All residents in the Wallaceville and Whakatiki area of Upper Hutt are asked to check their backyards and any structures such as wood sheds or garages in case Mary is taking shelter in them.
"It is also likely that Mary may be hiding in bushes."
Authorities are asking those members of the public wanting to help in the search to stick to main streets, public areas and tracks.
