The grandmother of a disabled Christchurch boy who has a hard time making friends has desperately appealed for other children to attend his fifth birthday party.

Jonty Payne turns five next month but his grandmother, Donna Payne, fears no one will show up to his party.

She told Daily Mail Australiathat Jonty's condition can occasionally cause him to lash out at other children and that he has never been invited to a party.

Jonty was born five-and-a-half weeks premature and has congenital scoliosis - a birth defect that causes a curve in the spine.

The adorable youngster, who was also missing ribs when he was born, has had a series of operations but still has difficulty getting around and quickly runs out of breath.

As well as sometimes needing a wheelchair, Jonty has language delay and has limited motor skills, which sometimes makes frustrates him and causes him to fall out with other children.

"He goes to kindy and he plays with the kids there - he has been at the school for two years - but he gets no invites to parties and struggles to make friends," Ms Payne told Daily Mail Australia.

Special needs charity SmileDial has stepped in and is fundraising to help throw Jonty a celebration to remember - and is welcoming any other children who want to come along.

SmileDial is hoping to crowdfund a venue, entertainers, food and, of course, presents.

Writing on the charity's Facebook page, SmileDial's founder Kelly Dugan wrote: "Yesterday I spoke with Jonty's grandmother (and full time carer) and she is worried about Jonty's fifth birthday on the 29th of October.

"Jonty has many challenges and has had a rough few years with ongoing spinal surgeries among other medical issues.

"Jonty finds it hard to make friends and [his grandmother] is concerned nobody will come if she has a party for him. So can we all get together and make Jonty's birthday amazing?"

Scores of people have chipped in with gifts and donations towards the birthday party, with all the money going towards either the event or Jonty's care.

Jonty, who loves trains and Thomas the Tank Engine, does not know about his grandmother's plans and his family are keeping it a surprise.

Ms Payne said she was "blown away" by the outpouring of support and said she was looking forward to seeing Jonty "run amok" at the party.

"I'm overwhelmed at the generous people out there," she said. "I'm blown away and I'm trying to get my head round it.

"I just want to say thank you to evetryone that's put in for this. There's so many generous people out there. And a special thanks to SmileDial and Kelly who has been awesome."
