Govt downgrades Fiji travel advisory

The Government has downgraded its warning to New Zealanders against travelling to Fiji.

Foreign Minister Phil Goff says the new advisory reflects an improving security situation there and is in line with the decision made by the United States, Britain and the Australian Governments.

Mr Goff says with George Speight and his supporters locked up awaiting trial on treason charges, and the crackdown by military forces, people are feeling more secure.

However he says there remains the possibility of isolated incidents which could be directed towards visitors.

The situation is calm on the western side of the main island around Nadi, the Coral Coast and offshore island resorts.

The Government warns against non essential travel to Suva, the eastern side of the main island and on Vanua Levu.
