By Glenn Harper

Winter has finally put in its appearance, making things a bit harder for golfers.

Big news at the club was the women's golf last Friday.

The Riverside Cup final matches were played at Eketahuna on wet and muddy grounds, where the Featherston women played Mahunga, coming out 4 to 2 winners. The team, led by Julie Murray in her first time as captain, won the cup for the first time in 27 years. Other members were Sharon Harper, Sally Fairbrother, Julie Dondertman, Cath Berry, Roz Harding along with Alison Saunders, Shona Pillar and Denise Larkin.

By Mike Dixon

The last interclub team to complete their 2013 season were the women's Riverside Cup team, who played Riversdale at Eketahuna last Friday.

Needing a good win to give themselves a chance of winning the trophy, the team almost did it with an excellent 5-1 victory but, as it turned out, this was not enough to pass Eketahuna and eventual winners Featherston, and Masterton came third by one point. Wins were recorded by Jeanette McNae, Janice Hayes, Venetta Justice, Janna Blundell and Trish Newcombe.

On Tuesday, the women played a Home Pennants Stableford round in cold, wet conditions, which resulted in a smaller-than-usual field. Results: 1 Jo Bird 37, 2 Sereana Phillipps 34, 2 Sylvia Beavis 33. Nearest the pin: Larraine Duckett and Sylvia Beavis.

Next Tuesday, the women hold a mid-winter fun day called Simply Red, which will include a split sixes competition.

On Monday, the vets struck a cold, showery day, which impacted on the field, and no women played. Results: Men Group 1: 1 Ash Peterson 24, 2 Charles Anderson 23, 3 Kevin Hooper 21. Men Group 2: 1 Bill Reid 26, 2 David Brenkley 20. Nearest the pin: Kelvin Biggs.

Last Saturday, the final of the men's Oldfield Rosebowl was played between Ray Verhaart and Barry Henderson. It was a seesaw battle, with Verhaart getting 3 up early, only to have Henderson fight back and be all square after 10 holes. However, as is often the case, the player who wins Masterton's Amen Corner (11, 12, 13 and 14) goes on to win and this was so on Saturday, with Verhaart winning three of the four holes to eventually win the trophy 4 and 2. For the rest of the field, Saturday was a Stableford round for men and women. Results: Men Group 1: 1 Murray Wolland 38, 2 Jeff Ogg 38, 3 Nigel Udy 36. Men Group 2: 1 Dominic Stewart 37, 2 Ray Verhaart 36, 3 Mike Falloon 35. Closest to the pin: Ian Buchanan and Wayne O'Donnell.

The Thursday Stableford field was severely reduced but the scoring was excellent. Results: 1= Nooroa Rota and Aaron Lethbridge 41, 3 Jeff Ogg. Nearest the pin: Geoff Mason.

This weekend, the men's club field will have a par round while the women have a free day.

Off the fairway

With the persistent rain and lack of wind, the course is beginning to get quite wet in some places, so it is a good time to remind all golfers about small things they can do to preserve the course. Please remember to walk on paths as much as possible, to refrain from walking on the fringes unless you have to, to keep carts and trolleys well away from the greens, and repair your pitch marks.
