Girls in Massey crash were fleeing police after running red light

Three teenage girls - including a 13-year-old - were injured after their car rolled as they fled police who had spotted them running a red light early this morning.

The crash in the Auckland suburb of Massey happened no more than 40 seconds after police began the pursuit, a police spokeswoman said.

A passing police car had seen the car running a red light at high speed on Don Buck Rd about 1.20am.

"Police, concerned about the dangerous manner of driving, activated lights and sirens. The vehicle failed to stop and police pursued the vehicle for no longer than 40 seconds," she said.

"The vehicle then lost control and rolled on the corner of Triangle and Makaroa Rds."

Fire and Emergency NZ shift manager Paul Radden said the car had rolled leaving two people trapped in the vehicle.

The fire service was called at 1.45am and the pair were freed by 2am, he said.

Fire crews attended from Henderson and Te Atatu, and used the jaws of life to cut off the roof of the car and extricate the pair.

A specialist lighting unit from FENZ also attended the scene, Radden said.

It was earlier reported there were two people with serious injuries. But the police spokeswoman said three girls - aged 13 to 17 - had minor injuries and they were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The Serious Crash Unit had attended the scene, and following further inquiries it was discovered the car had been stolen.

All three would be referred to Youth Aid, she said.
