A brilliant out by short stop Dean Gray sealed victory for the Giants under-15 boys softball team in their Hutt Valley competition match with Totara Park at South Park, Masterton, on Saturday.
Gray, who was one of the stars of the Giants side, coolly fielded the ball and took outthe runner at first base to give his side a 7-6 victory in a match which produced a remarkably high standard of play for this particular age group.
It was Giants who started strongly and built up a handy lead before a determined Totara Park squad launched an equally strong comeback and, in the end, the match could have gone either way.
Along with Gray the pitcher-catcher combination of Levi Harmon and Kieran Robinson stood out for Giants but the entire team deserved plaudits for the manner in which they dug deep when the pressure was on.
The Giants under-13 team also had an impressive win on Saturday.
They played an away match against Hutt and romped to a 24-3 victory.
There was success too for the Giants President's grade side but their win came without them even taking the diamond Hutt City United Bedrocks defaulting to them.
