Giant wine bottle mooted for Martinborough

Ohakune has its giant carrot, Paeroa its fizzy drink bottle and Martinborough may also soon have an icon to welcome visitors.

Motueka sculptor Bill Ayers has floated an idea with South Wairarapa District Council to craft a 6m-high, recycled corrugated iron wine bottle for the town square.

It would carry the names of every winery in the Martinborough district and Mr Ayers believes it would become a world talking point.

Mr Ayers estimated the huge bottle would cost up to $8000 to make and said he would be prepared to give some of his time for free.
